Downtown was empty except for the guy passed out in the corner booth and the college kid cramming for finals at table three. Neither of them was dying tonight. The tracker beeped again. Faster. Aiden wiped his hands on his apron and stepped out from behind the counter. The screen on his wrist showed a pulsing dot two blocks east. He had maybe four minutes before the target flatlined. Maybe less. "Hey." He tapped the college kid's shoulder. "I'm closing early. You gotta go." The kid looked up, eyes bloodshot. "But you're twenty-four hours—" "Not tonight." Aiden was already untying his apron. He grabbed his coat off the hook and shoved the kid's laptop into his backpack. "Out. Now." The guy in the corner booth didn't move. Aiden left him. Drunk sleepers weren't his problem unless the tracker said otherwise. He locked the door behind him and ran. Two blocks east meant the old metro station. The one the city condemned last year after the ceiling collapsed and killed a maintenance worker. Aiden's boots hit the pavement hard. The tracker was screaming now, red light strobing against his skin. Sixty seconds left. The station entrance was boarded up. Yellow caution tape flapped in the wind. Aiden didn't slow down.
