## Chapter 1 teaser
### Untitled Chapter

The phone is not mine. It lies on the carpet between my uncle's knee and mine, face up, and the recording has already started. A woman's voice, flattened by the speaker, says my name twice. Noura. Noura Al-Subaie. It says a danger comes to this gate because of me, and it gives the hour. The majlis has gone quiet the way a room goes quiet when nobody wants to be the first to move. Cardamom Gahwa cools in the Finjan at my elbow. Oud is still in the air from the burner. My uncle's rings turn on his fingers. My Abaya is closed to the throat and I keep my hands in my lap, where they can see them. I am a guest in this house. That is the only thing I have tonight that nobody can take off me. Bandar Al-Tamimi sits at the far end, near the door. White thobe, hard collar, no Bisht — this is not a wedding. He was sent to take me out to the car. Everyone here knows it. Two of his men stand by the arch with their hands crossed, and they are not looking at me. They are looking at him. He has not moved toward me. Somebody says the gate. Somebody says the car. My uncle asks me to say that the recording names me. I do not say it. Bandar sets his Finjan down without drinking. He does not raise his voice. He says the denunciation sits on him from tonight, and the room bends around that sentence like a rug pulled straight. A cousin's shoulder drops. The man by the arch studies the floor. Then Bandar reaches for the phone — not the recording, the case, the strap — and turns it face-down on the carpet. The burner has gone cold. The smoke has thinned to a smell and then to the memory of a smell. The phone lies face-down on the carpet with its strap curled, and no one reaches for it. His cuff, at the wrist. That is where my eyes stop, because everywhere else in this majlis is somebody deciding
