### Iron Arena - Chapter 1: No Tomorrow for Debtors

Victor's guys found me in the back alley behind Sal's Diner at eleven thirty on a Tuesday night. I was eating cold noodles out of a takeout box, sitting on a crate that smelled like motor oil and rotting vegetables. One of them kicked the crate out from under me. I landed hard, noodles everywhere. "Victor says you're late," the big one told me. His name was Renz. Shaved head, neck tattoos, the kind of guy who got paid to stand behind people and look mean. "Tell Victor I'm working on it." I stayed on the ground. Getting up seemed like a waste of energy. Renz laughed. It wasn't a nice sound. "You've been working on it for six months. He's done waiting." The other guy, skinnier, meaner looking, pulled me up by my jacket collar. "You're fighting tonight. Basement ring, Southport. Purse is eight thousand. Victor takes his cut, you keep the rest. Maybe that'll cover part of what you owe." "I don't fight anymore." My voice came out flat. I'd said this before. They never listened. "You do now." Renz shoved a data chip into my hand. "Rig codes. Opponent specs. Fight starts at one a.m. Don't make us come find you again." They left. I stood there in the alley, cold noodles on my boots, data chip burning a hole in my palm. The chip was warm. Fresh upload. That meant Victor had already registered me, already put money down, already told people Cole Varen was coming out of retirement for one night. I wanted to throw the chip in the gutter and walk away. I wanted a lot of things. Instead I went to the fight. The Southport basement ring wasn't really a basement. It was an old factory sublevel, three stories underground, concrete walls sweating rust and condensation. The crowd was maybe two hundred people, packed in tight around a sixty-foot combat circle. No barriers, no safety rails.
