"Don't move." The gun pressed cold against my ribs before I even saw the guy's face. I froze, half-crouched over the body, the courier's phone still warm in my hand. "Easy," I said. "I'm just—" "Shutting up." He stepped closer. Black jacket, no logo, eyes like he'd done this before. "Drop it." "Drop what?" "The phone." I looked down at the dead man between us. Blood pooled under his chest, spreading slow across the alley concrete. He'd been alive two minutes ago. I'd watched him stagger in, clutch the wall, and go down hard. "He's dead," I said. "And you're stealing from him." "I'm calling for help." "With his phone." "Mine's out of minutes." The guy with the gun didn't laugh. He shoved the muzzle harder into my side, right between the ribs where it hurt to breathe. "You know what's on that phone?" "No." "Then why'd you take it?" "Because I'm broke." That got a reaction. Not a smile. Just a flicker in his eyes, like he was deciding whether to shoot me now or drag it out. I didn't wait to find out. I twisted left, slammed my elbow into his wrist, and ran. The first shot went wide. The second one didn't. Pain exploded in my shoulder, hot and sharp, and I hit the alley wall hard enough to crack my teeth together. My knees buckled. The phone slipped, and I caught it with my good hand before it hit the ground. "Stay down," the guy said. He was walking toward me, gun still raised. "You don't know what you're holding." "Then tell me." "No." I pressed my back against the wall and tried to stand. My shoulder screamed. Blood soaked through my jacket, warm and sticky. "You're gonna kill me either way." "Probably."
