### Reset at the Execution Platform - Chapter 1: Morning on the Block

The chains were heavier this time. Rin Shen didn't need to open her eyes to know where she was. The iron cuffs bit into her wrists the same way they had before. The wood under her knees had the same splinters. Even the crowd noise had the same rhythm, that low ugly rumble of people who'd shown up early to watch someone die. She opened her eyes anyway. Same execution platform. Same red banners with gold script she couldn't read upside down. Same stink of old blood in the wood grain that no amount of rain could wash out. The sky was still that pale pre-dawn gray, which meant she had maybe twenty minutes before the actual sentence got read and the blade came down. Twenty minutes before Kael Pei walked up those steps and gave the order. Her stomach twisted. Not fear. Not anymore. This was her fourth time waking up to this morning and fear had burned out somewhere around round two. Now it was just anger, and the sick tired feeling of knowing exactly how the next hour would go if she didn't find a way to break it. The first run, she'd begged. Cried. Sworn she was innocent. The crowd had loved that. Kael had watched her with those cold dark eyes and hadn't said a word until the very end, and by then her head was already in the block. The second run, she'd tried to fight. Broke a guard's nose. Someone clubbed her in the ribs hard enough that she tasted blood, and they dragged her back to the platform and tied her down. Kael still came. Still gave the order. She'd screamed his name that time. He didn't even blink. Third run, she'd gone quiet. Listened. Watched. Tried to figure out who in the crowd actually wanted her dead and who was just there for the show. She'd caught Kael looking at her twice, and the second time his mouth had tightened just a fraction, like he'd bitten down
