His apprentice sash was still knotted crooked across his chest, like he'd tied it in a hurry that morning. Now it was soaking red. Kade didn't move. Couldn't. His hands were shaking and his work knife was still in his pocket and none of that mattered because the North Ward had just collapsed and half the street was screaming. Smoke poured through the gap where the barrier used to be. Thick. Greasy. It smelled like burnt hair and something worse underneath. Something that came from the Rift. "Stay back!" Someone in guard armor was shouting, but people weren't listening. They were running. Shoving. A woman went down hard near the fountain and nobody stopped to help her up. Kade's chest was tight. He'd been standing right here when it happened. One second the ward was humming, stable, the usual blue shimmer holding back the dark. The next, the runes cracked. Just split apart like they were made of glass. He'd heard the sound first—a wet snap, like bone breaking—and then the whole thing came down. The kid had been running toward the ward when it collapsed. Kade didn't know why. Maybe he thought he could fix it.
