"Put it down." I looked up. Five men. Fur cloaks, bronze-tipped spears, faces painted ash-gray. They stood in a half-circle thirty feet out, blocking the only gap in the rocks. "Put what down?" I said. The one in front pointed his spear at my hand. "The stone." I glanced down. Black glass, size of a phone, sharp edges, warm. Too warm. My palm was slick with sweat or blood, I couldn't tell which. The thing was glowing faintly, pulsing like a heartbeat. "I don't know what this is," I said. "I just woke up here." "Liar." The speaker took a step forward. He was older, scar across his jaw, eyes like he'd already decided I was dead. "You crossed the boundary. You broke the seal. You touched what was sworn." "I didn't touch anything. I opened my eyes and it was in my hand." "Then you'll die holding it." He raised the spear. I stepped back. My heel hit a rock and I went down hard on my ass. The black glass burned hotter, and something flickered in the air in front of my face. A progress bar. I blinked. Still there. Translucent, floating, blue-white text underneath: *Host bonded. Shard integrity 14%. Analyzing environment.* "What the hell," I said. "He speaks to it," one of the others muttered. "He's chosen." "Chosen or not, he stole it." The leader came closer. "Drop it. Now. Or we take your hand with it." I tried. I opened my fingers. The stone stayed stuck to my palm, fused there, burning. I shook my hand. Nothing. "I can't," I said. "It won't let go." "Then we cut." He lunged. I rolled left and the spear hit rock where my ribs had been, sparks flying. I scrambled up, still clutching the stone, and ran. There was no plan. No direction. Just away.
