The ceiling came down three feet in front of Noah's face. Concrete dust punched through the subway car. The lights blew out. Somebody screamed so hard the sound cracked halfway through, then the whole train lurched sideways with a metal-on-metal shriek that made Noah's teeth hurt. He grabbed the nearest pole with one hand and caught a kid by the hood with the other before the kid slammed into the floor. "Stay down!" Noah yelled. The car bucked again. People were everywhere. On the floor. Across seats. Shoving toward doors that wouldn't open. The air smelled like burned wiring, brake dust, and blood. Noah's EMT bag was still strapped across his chest. Thank God for cheap plastic buckles, because the thing had tried to choke him when the train hit whatever it had hit. His phone buzzed in his pocket. For one stupid second, he thought it might be his sister. Then another chunk of ceiling crashed down where he had been standing. Yeah. Phone later. "Everybody who can move, get low and stay low!" Noah shouted. "Don't force the doors. There's probably live power somewhere. If you're bleeding, press hard on it. Use your shirt if you have to. Just don't—" A woman shoved past him, sobbing, one hand locked around the wrist of an old man who looked like he'd been hit by a truck. Noah dropped to his knees beside them. "Sir, can you hear me?" The old man blinked at him. "My hip. Jesus Christ, my hip." "Okay. That's good. You can complain, you're awake." Noah checked his neck, his breathing, the angle of his leg. Not great. But not dead. "Don't move. Ma'am, keep talking to him. Tell him something embarrassing from his past. Keep him mad." The woman stared at him. "Trust me. He'll hate it. It'll help."
