### Death Lines - Chapter 1: The Name in the Wall

"You're bleeding on my floor." I looked down. Blood dripped from my knuckles onto the warped hardwood, dark spots spreading between the cracks. I'd punched the wall in the bedroom. Thought I heard something moving inside it. "Sorry," I said. "I'll clean it." The landlord stood in the doorway, backlit by the porch light, shoulders filling the frame. Daniel Roy. Mid-thirties, maybe. Dressed like he'd just come from somewhere that required a tie but had ripped it off in the car. He didn't move closer. "You called me at midnight," he said. "Said you heard someone say your name." "Not my name." I wrapped my hand in the hem of my scrub top. The fabric turned red. "My mother's." "Your mother." "Catherine. Catherine Cash. Someone in the wall said it three times." He stepped inside. Locked the door behind him. That's when I noticed he'd brought a duffel bag. Heavy, from the way it pulled his shoulder down. "Show me where," he said. I led him to the bedroom. The one with the closet door that wouldn't stay shut and the window that faced the yard full of dead grass. The wall I'd punched was beside the bed, plaster cracked in a starburst pattern around the impact site. "There," I said. "Right there. I heard it." Daniel set the duffel on the floor. Unzipped it. Inside: a digital recorder, a flashlight, a hammer, something that looked like a stud finder but wasn't. "You brought gear," I said. "I always bring gear." "To tenant calls?" "To this house." He ran the not-stud-finder along the wall, watching a screen on its side. "You're the fourth person to hear voices here. Third person to hear a name that belongs to someone dead." My stomach dropped. "You knew." "I told you the rent was low for a reason." "You said the last tenant moved out." "She did." He tapped the wall. "In a body bag.
