The cop shoved Nora’s hands against the hood of the squad car hard enough to rattle her teeth. “Don’t move.” “Yeah, because that’s what I was planning. Sprinting away in cuffs.” Her cheek hit cold metal. Not rain-cold. Ambulance-cold. The kind of cold that came after heat had chewed through everything else. Behind her, the subway entrance belched gray smoke into the street. People stood behind the yellow tape with their phones up. Some were crying. Some were filming. One guy in a suit had ash streaked across his face and still kept yelling at every uniform he saw. “My wife was down there!” he screamed. “My wife was on that train!” Nora swallowed against the bile in her throat. She knew that smell. Burned plastic. Melted insulation. Concrete dust. Hot steel. And under all of it, the sharp rotten stink of something that had no business burning underground. Not gas. Not electrical. Not anything normal. “Officer,” she said, keeping her voice level because losing it never helped. “You need to get a fire marshal inside before anyone touches the lower platform. The blast pattern doesn’t make sense.” The cop pressing her down laughed once. “Pretty confident for the person we found crawling out of the restricted access tunnel.” “I wasn’t crawling. I was looking for my brother.” “Your brother’s name?” “Milo Vale. Twenty-two. Brown hair. Green jacket. He texted me from the platform ten minutes before the explosion.” The cop finally loosened his grip enough for her to turn her head. He was young. Too young for the hard line he was trying to hold in his mouth. His name tag said HARRIS. “Put that in your report,” Nora said. “He was there.
