Lightning crawled through its upper atmosphere in branching veins. Each flash lit the clouds from within, revealing mountains of vapor rolling beneath Kellan Vey’s battered salvage skiff. The skiff shuddered hard enough to rattle his teeth. "Tell me that was turbulence," Brom Hark said over the intercom. Kellan kept both hands on the flight yoke. The metal was warm beneath his gloves. Every warning rune on the console burned amber or red, and one of the engine displays had gone completely dark. "That was turbulence," Kellan said. A second impact slammed into the hull. The skiff dropped twelve meters. Brom swore. Somewhere behind Kellan, a crate tore loose from its restraints and crashed into the bulkhead. Kellan corrected the dive with a sharp pull, feeling the inertial dampers lag before catching. The skiff climbed through a wall of copper-colored cloud. Static hissed across the cockpit glass. For half a second, the world outside vanished. Then the wreck appeared. It fell through the storm below them, nose-first and burning. The warship had once been a city-killer, a black spear nearly a kilometer long. Now its armor was peeled open in strips, exposing ribs of structural steel and glowing conduits. Several of its engines still flared, though they pushed the vessel deeper into Helios instead of away from it. A crown-shaped insignia, half melted by heat, marked the hull beneath the bridge.
