### Chapter 1: The Death Notice in the Watch

Rain turned the city into a sheet of hammered tin. It drummed against the awning outside Lan’s Restorations, ran in silver threads down the front window, and gathered in the gutters where neon signs bled red and violet into the water. Every few seconds, a bus groaned past, spraying the curb. The sound made the tiny shop tremble in its bones. Lin Lan did not look up. She held a jeweler’s loupe to her right eye and leaned over the open pocket watch beneath the brass lamp. The watch lay in a shallow porcelain dish, its cracked glass removed and its silver case propped open like a patient’s chest. Inside, the gears were black with age. A single blue thread—too fine to be metal, too bright to be dust—had wound itself around the balance wheel. Lin reached for her tweezers. “Don’t pull me apart,” the watch whispered. The tweezers stopped a breath above the mechanism. Its voice was the sound of a man speaking from the bottom of a well. Not words carried through air, exactly. More like pressure behind her teeth, an emotion compressed until it took the shape of language. Lin lowered the loupe. “Good evening to you too.” The watch clicked once. Its minute hand shivered backward. “Don’t pull me apart.” “I’m repairing you.” “You always say that.” Lin glanced toward the front window. The shop was empty except for shelves of broken things: wedding rings without their partners, music boxes with silent teeth, a child’s red shoe stiff with old mud, three porcelain saints with their faces rubbed smooth. Rain blurred the street beyond them. No one stood outside. She looked back at the watch. “Have we met?” The answer came as a sudden ache in her left palm. Heat. A man’s hand closing around hers. The smell of tobacco and wet wool. A promise made under a train platform while a clock screamed
