And the cursed thing crawling over his chest had more gold in it than Evelyn had seen in one room all month. Black fire threaded under his skin in ugly little branches. It started at the wound in his side, then climbed over his chest, his throat, his jaw. Every few seconds, the marks lit up from inside. He sucked in a breath through his teeth. The basement stank like rust, burned hair, and the cheap disinfectant Mara used when she wanted people to think this place was cleaner than it was. Evelyn crouched beside him and pressed two fingers against the edge of the black marks. The curse snapped at her. Not physically. It didn’t have teeth.
