My boots were still planted in the grime of the Sector 4 vault, and my fingers were clamped tight around the gene stabilizer—a sleek, silver cylinder that felt like a frozen lightning bolt in my palm. I didn't turn around. I didn't need to. The click of a high-grade kinetic pistol locking onto my skull told me everything. "Wrong day to play hero, Mara," the man said. His voice was smooth, like expensive whiskey and cold steel. "Or wrong day to be a thief. Which one is it?" I shifted my weight, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I'm not a hero. He was solid, a wall of engineered muscle and tailored fabric. "You've got a lot of nerve stealing from the Rusk estate," he murmured, his breath hot against my ear. "Do you have any idea who I am?" "A prick with a god complex?" I spat. "I've met plenty of those in the slums." He chuckled, a low vibration that I felt in my own bones.
