"Oh, hell." Nora Venn jammed her hand deeper into the torn wall of the noble train. Hot copper. Broken glass. Something wet that definitely wasn't oil. Her fingers closed around a silver gear. Not the part she wanted. The patrol automaton took one heavy step through the fog. Clang. She yanked the gear loose, dropped it into her sack. The machine raised its arm. Blue charge crawled over its metal fingers. "You can keep the train," she whispered. "I only want the expensive bit." It fired. Nora ducked. The blast punched through the carriage wall beside her head and blew a hole through the red velvet seat. Heat slapped her cheek. She rolled across the floor, kicked open the opposite door, and jumped. She landed in a pile of coal dust three feet below. Her bad knee screamed. "Yeah, yeah. Complain later." Another blast tore through the carriage. The fog flashed blue. Nora grabbed the edge of the train, dragged herself under the chassis, and flattened against the wet stones. Above her, metal feet moved through the wreckage. One step. Then another. The patrol automaton had been built to guard the royal line. It didn't get tired. It didn't care about rain, cold, or the fact that half the train had been thrown across the tracks. It would search every inch until it found her. Nora held her breath. Her lungs burned. A drop of blood slid from her cheek and hit stone. The machine stopped. Its head turned toward the sound. Nora bit down hard on the inside of her mouth. No pain. No movement. Not even a twitch.
