### The Hatch

His palm slams the wall beside my head before I can turn around. "Don't," Calder Vane says, low, like he's talking to a dog that might still bolt. "Don't you dare run in my house." The steel is cold through my coat, colder where his other hand pins my jaw, thumb pressed flat under my chin, tilting my face up into the one bare bulb hanging over us. Cedar and gun oil. That's what he smells like this close, and it's doing something to my knees I don't have time to be ashamed of. "Your house," I say, "is a bunker under a dead man's dock." "My bunker." His mouth is an inch from my ear. "You walked into it carrying a ledger with my cousin's name in it. That wasn't smart, Ira." I go still. He knows my name. That's new information and I hate that it's the thing that scares me, more than the hand on my jaw, more than the fact my back is against a wall that doesn't have a door on this side that I can see. "Let go of me and I'll explain the ledger." "No." He says it like it's the easiest word in the world. Then his hand drops from my jaw to my throat — not squeezing, just resting there, two fingers finding my pulse like he's counting it. "You'll explain it in here." He hauls me sideways by the collar of my coat, and I stumble through a hatch I didn't even see open, into a room the size of a walk-in closet lined in scored steel. The door — round, riveted, straight off a submarine — swings shut behind him on its own weight, and the sound it makes when it seats into the frame is the worst sound I've heard all year. A wheel spins. A bolt drops home with a clunk that I feel in my back teeth. "Open it," I say. "No." "Calder." "That's the first time you've said my name." He leans against the hatch, arms crossed, taking up the only exit like it's furniture built for him. The bulb in here
