Chapter 1: The Locked Table "Sign it." My father's hand clamps around my wrist and drags my fingers toward the pen like I'm twelve again, failing cursive in his study. The deed sits under fluorescent courthouse light, my name already typed at the bottom. Pell. Like it's a brand, not a word. "Richard." The lawyer, Dobbs, doesn't look up from his folder. "She initials page four herself. The witnesses are watching." They are. Six campaign staffers in navy blazers line the back wall of my father's signing office, cameras folded away for now, like this is just another handshake photo before the primary. A marriage deed dressed up as a donor event. Luca Crowe hasn't moved from the head of the table since he walked in. Dark suit, no tie, watching me the way a man watches a door he already owns the key to. "Does she scream?" he asks. Not to me. To my father. Like I'm a used car he's deciding whether to buy. My father laughs, short and ugly. "She doesn't talk at all, Mr. Crowe. You'll get used to the quiet." Luca's eyes stay on me while he reaches for his own pen. "I don't mind quiet."
