The wheels rattled over the threshold of Saint Agnes Medical Center, catching in the grooves of the tile. Behind her, thunder rolled above the city like furniture being dragged across an attic floor. “Male, approximately thirty-five,” the paramedic shouted. “Found collapsed outside the old Saint Veyre Theatre. No ID. Weak pulse, shallow respirations. Possible head trauma, possible overdose.” “Trauma Two,” Maeve called. “Get respiratory down here. And page Dr. Alvarez.” The patient’s face was turned toward the ceiling. Rain threaded through his dark hair and ran into his ears. He wore a charcoal suit beneath a torn wool coat, expensive enough to have survived the weather if the wearer had not. One cuff was fastened with a silver button shaped like a tiny theater mask. Maeve saw the first line before she touched him. It appeared in the air above his chest, thin and white, as if written by a pen made of moonlight. I didn’t know the dead could be so loud.
