## Chapter 1 teaser
### Chapter 1

The majlis smells of Oud, and of the coffee the housekeeper has been pouring since before I came in. I keep my Abaya on. The Shaila is pinned at my collarbone. I sit on the second cushion, a hand's width back from the Sadr, and I do not reach for the Finjan first. Turki does not look at me while he speaks. He looks at his uncle, who is talking about a contract, and about a man who signed something he should not have signed. "He thought he was buying a position," the uncle says. Amber, worn pale at the edges. He moves one bead, and stops. I feel that stop the way I feel the Shamal against the north wall — pressure with no sound in it. Then he looks at me. Not at the hall. At me. "Nouf." He sets his cup down on the saucer. His cuff is white and closed at the wrist, and the bead is still between his fingers, and he does not move it. He does not say it again. He lets it stand in the room until the room has no choice but to look at me. I keep my right hand flat on my knee. The other one holds the Finjan at the rim, the way the housekeeper taught me before I was tall eno
