Abyss Bound: The Forbidden Pact

Chapter 4

Abyss Bound: The Forbidden Pact. Shadow Puppeteer

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Ella screamed, though it came out more like a choked gasp.

The Light Guard’s grip was like a vice around her wrists, pinning her against the cold marble pillar of the ballroom. He was huge, smelling of ozone and arrogance, his armor clanking as he shoved her harder into the stone.

"Ella?" The guard’s voice shifted from aggression to pure shock. He stared at her face, his eyes widening. "You’re dead. We saw the body in the Abyss. How the hell are you standing here?"

Ella didn't answer. She couldn't. Her lungs felt like they were filled with broken glass. Every breath was a battle, and the only thing keeping her heart beating was the cold, oily presence coiled around her spine.

*Pathetic,* a voice purred inside her head. *You’re trembling, little bird. Is this the 'fierce' heiress who wanted to burn it all down?*

Cain wasn't visible, but she could feel him. He was a weight in her shadow, a predator watching her struggle from the dark. He wasn't helping. He was enjoying this.

"I don't know how I'm here," Ella spat, squinting up at the guard, "but I know you're going to regret touching me."

"Still got the mouth," the guard sneered. He tightened his grip, his gauntlet digging into her skin. "Lucas told us you were gone. He said you were a waste of blood. Maybe I'll just finish the job and save everyone the trouble."

He raised a fist, glowing with a harsh, blinding white light.

*Want the power, Ella?* Cain’s voice was a velvet blade, slicing through her panic. *I can make him crawl. I can make him tear his own eyes out just to stop looking at you. All it takes is a little more of you. Give it to me.*

Ella didn't hesitate. "Do it. Take it all!"

Suddenly, the world tilted. A surge of ice-cold energy ripped through her chest, dragging her breath away. It wasn't a gentle flow; it was a violent theft. She felt her life force being sucked out through her pores, fueling something monstrous beneath her feet.

And then, the shadows moved.

Not a flicker, but a flood. The darkness from the corners of the room surged forward like a tidal wave of ink. It didn't just cover the floor; it rose, forming jagged, obsidian claws that slammed into the guard’s ankles.

"What the—!"

With a sickening *crack*, the shadows jerked. The guard was ripped off his feet, slammed face-first into the marble floor. The sound of his nose breaking echoed through the sudden silence of the ballroom.

Ella gasped, her knees buckling. She slid down the pillar, her chest heaving. The power felt like a drug—terrifying, addictive, and completely out of her control.

"Look at them," Cain whispered, his voice now vibrating in the air around her, though he remained unseen. "Look at their faces. They’re terrified of you. Or rather, they’re terrified of what’s eating you alive."

Across the room, Lucas was staring. His face, usually a mask of perfect nobility, had cracked. He looked pale, his eyes darting from Ella to the writhing shadows on the floor.

"Ella?" Lucas called out, his voice trembling. He took a step forward, his hand reaching out in a gesture that looked like concern but felt like a trap. "This is madness. What have you done? What kind of forbidden art is this?"

Ella forced herself to stand. Her legs were shaking, but she glared at him with a hatred so pure it felt physical. "Madness? You threw me into a pit of monsters, Lucas. You wrote a fucking eulogy for me while I was still breathing. You don't get to ask questions."

"I did what was necessary for the family!" Lucas shouted back, his composure slipping. "You were a liability! A stain on the Sterling name!"

"Then let's see how the name looks when I burn it to the ground," Ella snapped.

She tried to summon the shadows again, but the moment she reached for the power, a sharp, searing pain spiked through her head. She stumbled, clutching her temples.

*Greedy,* Cain chuckled. *You can't just take the sword without feeling the edge, little bird. Your body is a fragile thing. If you want more, you have to pay more.*

He materialized then. Not fully, but a silhouette of smoke and moonlight stepped out of her shadow. He didn't stand next to her; he stood *behind* her, his chest nearly brushing her back. His presence was overwhelming, a cold pressure that made the air feel thick.

Ella felt a hand—long, pale fingers with nails like obsidian—brush lightly against the nape of her neck. The touch sent a jolt of electricity through her, a mix of pure terror and an unwanted, humming heat.

"You're hooked," Cain whispered in her ear, his breath smelling of winter and old blood. "You hate the leash, but you love the feeling of the power, don't you?"

Ella shivered, leaning back into him instinctively before she realized what she was doing. She jerked away, her face flushing. "I don't love anything about you."

"Liar," he murmured. He stepped closer again, pinning her between his ethereal form and the cold marble. He didn't touch her with force, but the way he looked at her—like she was a piece of fruit he was deciding whether to peel or crush—felt more restrictive than the guard's grip. "You crave it. The way the room goes silent when you walk in. The way Lucas looks at you now. You’re not the disgraced heiress anymore. You’re my puppet."

"I'm no one's puppet," she hissed, though her voice lacked conviction.

"We'll see." Cain vanished back into the floor, his voice lingering like a ghost. "Go on. Play with your food. But remember, every time I fight for you, I take a piece of you with me. Eventually, there won't be enough left to bury."

Ella ignored him, turning her gaze back to Lucas. The crowd of nobles was whispering now, a hive of gossip and fear. She could see the judgment in their eyes, but for the first time, she didn't care.

She walked toward Lucas, each step feeling heavy, her vision blurring at the edges. She stopped just inches from him. He smelled of expensive cologne and cowardice.

"You think you've won because you have the title," Ella said, her voice low and dangerous. "But I've been to the bottom of the world, Lucas. I've seen things that would make your soul shrivel. You're not a leader. You're just a placeholder."

Lucas sneered, trying to recover his pride. "You're a freak, Ella. A monster. The guards will have you in a cell by midnight, and I'll be the one signing the order."

"Then you better sign it fast," she whispered, a dark smirk playing on her lips. "Because I'm not leaving this house until I've taken everything you love."

As she turned to leave the ballroom, her eyes caught her reflection in a massive, gold-rimmed mirror.

Ella stopped dead.

In the mirror, she looked exhausted, her dress torn, her eyes sunken. But it wasn't her face that made her breath catch.

She looked down at the floor. The lighting in the room was bright, the chandeliers blazing. But the shadow stretching out from her feet wasn't a human silhouette.

It was massive. It had curved horns, clawed hands, and eyes that glowed with a predatory, violet light. The shadow wasn't following her movements—it was watching her, its mouth curling into a grin that mirrored Cain's.

And then, the shadow reached out and grabbed the reflection of Lucas's ankle in the mirror, squeezing until the glass began to crack.

Don't stop now. The next chapter is waiting.
