Chapter 5 · Ash Ledger - Chapter 5: The First Gate

Ash Ledger: Blood Bound Soldier. Ash Ledger - Chapter 5: The First Gate

"They're coming through the armory." Bram shoved the bolt home and turned. "You've got maybe ten minutes before Voss's men crack that lower door."

Rowan pressed his back against the cold stone. The weapons vault sat three levels below the main keep, carved into the old march bedrock. He could hear boots echoing down the spiral stair above them. Mara stood with her wrists still bound, her knife back on her hip because he'd had no choice. If they ran into a patrol, she needed to look like his prisoner, not his ally.

"Can we bar it from inside?" he asked.

Bram laughed, short and bitter. "Bar it? Kid, that door's older than the fort. The hinges are on the outside. We lock ourselves in, we're buried."

Mara moved to the nearest rack. Swords, polearms, crossbows still wrapped in oilcloth. Her fingers traced the edge of a short blade. "How many men does Voss have down here?"

"Enough." Bram pulled a ring of keys from his belt. "And they're not here to arrest you. They're here to bury this whole mess and anyone who knows about it."

Rowan's hand went to the ledger in his coat. The ink had been crawling across the pages since they entered the vault. New lines, new marks. He couldn't read half of it, but one phrase kept surfacing: *the first gate holds the second.*

"What gate?" he muttered.

Mara's head snapped toward him. "What did you say?"

"The ledger. It keeps talking about a gate."

She crossed the space between them in two strides. Her voice dropped. "Show me."

"No time for a book club." Bram waved them toward the back wall. "There's a service passage behind the old racks. Leads to the cistern tunnel. It's tight, it's wet, and if the rain's been heavy, it's drowned. But it's the only way out that doesn't go through Voss."

Rowan pulled the ledger out. The pages fell open to a diagram he hadn't seen before. A map. Rookfall's lower levels, but older, with chambers that didn't exist anymore. Or shouldn't.

Mara leaned in. Her breath was warm against his shoulder. "That's not the fort we're standing in."

"No." Rowan traced the lines. "It's what was here before."

The sound of steel on stone rang out from the stairwell. Voices. Orders.

"Move," Bram hissed. He dragged a rack aside. The wall behind it was cut stone, older than the rest, with a seam running down the center. He fit a key into a slot Rowan hadn't noticed. The stone groaned and shifted inward.

Cold air rushed out. It smelled like iron and old water.

Mara went through first. Rowan followed, and Bram pulled the rack back into place before slipping in behind them. The passage was narrow, the ceiling low. Rowan had to turn sideways to fit. The ledger pressed against his ribs.

"How far?" Mara's voice bounced off the stone.

"Fifty yards to the cistern junction." Bram's breathing was labored. "Then we climb."

They moved in silence. Rowan's boots slipped on wet stone. The air grew colder. Somewhere ahead, he could hear water dripping. The ledger's warmth bled through his coat, a slow pulse that matched his heartbeat.

Mara stopped. "Do you hear that?"

Rowan froze. Ahead, past the sound of water, something else. A low hum. Not mechanical. Not human.

"That's the cistern," Bram said, but his voice had gone uncertain.

"That's not water," Mara said.

The passage opened into a wider chamber. The cistern should have been here. Rowan remembered the fort plans. A круглый stone basin, twenty feet across, fed by runoff from the upper courts.

But the basin was gone.

In its place, a circle of carved stone, glowing faint blue in the dark. Symbols ran along the outer edge, old script Rowan didn't recognize. In the center, something moved. Not water. Light. It pulsed slow, like a living thing.

"What the hell is that?" Bram whispered.

Rowan pulled out the ledger. The pages flipped on their own, fast, stopping on the map. The chamber they were standing in was marked. And beneath it, in fresh ink: *First gate. Sealed 1102. Warden dead. No replacement.*

"It's a gate," Rowan said. "The ledger's been tracking it."

Mara moved closer to the edge. "A gate to where?"

"Don't." Rowan grabbed her arm. The moment his fingers touched her wrist, the light in the circle flared. The hum rose to a shriek.

Mara jerked back. "What did you do?"

"I didn't—"

The stone beneath them shuddered. Cracks spiderwebbed out from the circle. The light pulsed faster now, brighter. Rowan could feel heat rolling off it.

Bram stumbled backward. "We need to leave. Now."

A shape rose from the circle. Not light anymore. Solid. Tall. It moved like a man, but the edges were wrong, blurred. Its head turned toward them. No face. Just a hollow where a face should be.

Rowan's hand went to his belt. He had a knife. It felt useless.

Mara drew her blade. "Rowan. The ledger. What does it say?"

He forced his eyes down to the page. The ink was still moving. New words formed: *Warden bond incomplete. Seal failing. Authorized agents: one.*

"It wants a warden," he said. "Someone to hold the gate."

"How do you know?"

"Because it's asking me."

The construct stepped out of the circle. The stone where it walked cracked and blackened. It moved toward Bram first. He raised his hands, backing toward the passage.

"Don't run," Mara said. Her voice was steady. "It's faster than you."

Rowan opened the ledger wide. "How do I stop it?"

The pages burned under his hands. Not fire. Just heat. The words came fast: *Speak the warden's oath. Bind the gate. Hold until relieved.*

"And if I don't?"

*Seal breaks. Gate opens. Rookfall falls before dawn.*

The construct reached for Bram. Mara moved. She put herself between them, blade up. The construct's arm swept out. She ducked, but not fast enough. The edge of its hand caught her shoulder and sent her sprawling.

Rowan didn't think. He stepped forward, ledger open, and spoke the words forming on the page. Old words. Not his language, but his mouth knew them.

The construct stopped. Its hollow face turned toward him.

The ledger flared white-hot. Rowan's vision blurred. He felt something lock into place, like a bolt sliding home inside his chest. The construct's form flickered. Once. Twice.

Then it collapsed inward and vanished.

The light in the circle dimmed. The hum died. The chamber fell silent except for Rowan's breathing and the sound of Mara pushing herself up off the stone.

Bram was pressed against the wall, white-faced. "What the hell did you just do?"

Rowan looked down at the ledger. New ink crawled across the page, slow and deliberate:

*Warden bond accepted. First gate stabilized. Temporary seal in place. Duration: fourteen days.*

And below that, in smaller script:

*The first gate was a seal. The second is a lock. The third is a choice.*

Mara got to her feet. Her shoulder was already bruising. She looked at Rowan, then at the circle, then back at him. "You just made yourself part of this place."

"I didn't have a choice."

"There's always a choice." She wiped blood from her lip. "You just picked the one that keeps you here."

Rowan closed the ledger. His hands were shaking. "It said fourteen days. Then what?"

Mara met his eyes. "Then you'd better hope there's someone else who can hold it. Because if that thing comes back and you're not here—"

The passage behind them echoed with boots. Voices. Closer now.

Bram grabbed Rowan's arm. "We're out of time. There's a drainage shaft on the far side. Move."

They ran. Rowan's ribs ached where the ledger pressed against him. He could still feel the heat of it, the weight of whatever he'd just agreed to. Mara was ahead, her bound wrists forgotten. She moved like she knew these tunnels.

Maybe she did.

The drainage shaft was narrow, steep, and slick with moss. Bram went first, then Mara. Rowan climbed last, his fingers slipping on wet iron rungs.

Above, he could hear the night wind. The sound of the fort settling.

And below, in the chamber they'd just left, something cracked.

Rowan froze. He looked down.

The glow was back. Faint. Pulsing.

The ledger burned hot against his ribs.

New words, appearing line by line:

*First gate stable. Second gate pressure increasing.*

*Seal will not hold.*

*The first gate was a seal.*
