Chapter 21 · “You know that voice,” he said. “Quiet.” “You
“You know that voice,” he said.
“Quiet.”
“You know him.”
“I said quiet.”
The voice came again, louder this time.
“Open the door, little saint. You’ve brought me exactly what I wanted.”
Seraphina’s eyes fixed on the dented iron.
“Show yourself,” she called.
“Still giving orders? Cale said you would.”
Her sword lifted.
Raven caught her wrist before she could strike the door.
“Don’t.”
She twisted, trying to break his hold. “Let go.”
“Not until you tell me who that is.”
“He’s nobody.”
“Funny. Nobody knows both our names.”
“He’s baiting you.”
The corner of her mouth twitched. “You’re enjoying this.”
“I’m enjoying watching you lie badly.”
Her free hand pressed against his chest. “One more word and I’ll put you through the door.”
“You can’t. The tether.”
“Then I’ll drag you with me.”
“That’s the spirit.”
The next blow hit hard enough to buckle the hinges.
Seraphina stumbled into Raven. His arm locked around her waist before she fell. Her back pressed to his chest, her sword trapped between them.
“Move,” she said.
“Where?”
“Anywhere.”
“We have five paces.”
“Then stand five paces closer.”
“I’m already close enough to count your breaths.”
Her breathing stopped for half a second.
