Chapter 20 · Memory Burn
Kael woke on harbor stones, salt on his lips.
What remained?
Orientation bell rang.
His trunk sat beside him. Letter in pocket. Name Kael Ashford.
He remembered—mother's bargain, Dorian's cufflink, Liora's song. Felt hollow where iteration details had been.
Dorian sat nearby, crying quietly. "I remember we did something. Not how many times."
Liora stared at sky. "Enough."
Corin lay unconscious, bleeding but breathing.
Father's voice on wind, fading: "Proud."
Breach scar above harbor glowed stable—sealed.
Serath nowhere.
Students poured down stairs, confused. Dean Serath—different tone—ordered aid.
Halven missing.
Renn bandaged Corin. "You people are insane."
"Yes," Kael said.
Vesper hugged him. "Day thirty isn't over."
Sunset clock: six hours left in term's last day per academic calendar.
Ghost-Miren in mirror one last time: "Stitch holds if academy acknowledges wound. Public truth. Founders' crime admitted."
Political nightmare.
Necessary.
Kael walked up harbor stairs toward academy, legs shaking.
Dorian fell in step. "Together."
"Together."
At the gates, a figure waited—his mother, solid, eyes clear.
Not puppet.
"Son," she said. "I'm free. So are you. Don't waste it."
She hugged him—real warmth.
Then she whispered, "Serath left a seed. Day thirty isn't safe.
