Chapter 32 · Eighth Chime
Maintenance replaced the eastern gear per Kael's order. The artificer logged the repair. Tomas attached the log to his clock observations. Three columns converged: weather, mechanism, witness. Still no fold. Still worth recording.
The anomaly announced itself during a faculty budget hearing, which felt appropriate—time folding where money argued with conscience.
Kael sat at the ethics committee table with Vesper's quarterly watchdog report open before him and listened to Dean Serath's successor describe "necessary efficiencies" in ward maintenance. The language was cleaner than harvest rhetoric had been. The shape was familiar.
The eastern tower clock began its noon chime.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven.
Kael's pen stopped.
Eight did not come.
The silence lasted long enough for Tamsin to glance up from her notes. Long enough for a junior clerk to clear his throat. Long enough for Kael's skin to prickle with copper-ash memory. Then the eighth note sounded—thin, delayed, like a bell heard through water—and the room exhaled as if nothing had happened.
Nothing had happened.
Except the jar of Corin's marbles on Kael's desk rattled once against glass though no one had touched it.
