Chapter 8 · Breach Whispers
Eighteenth morning.
Kael didn't come alone.
Liora argued. Dorian insisted. In the end, all three descended the harbor stairs at false dawn with Miren's map burned into memory.
The fish sigil door appeared when Liora hummed measure sixteen—a phrase from the countdown music that made stone sweat.
Beyond lay tunnels lined with black glass that reflected wrong. Kael's lagging reflection walked beside him, mouth open in silent screams.
"Don't look," Liora said for the third time.
The tunnel opened into a cavern beneath the city. Air tasted of metal and old magic.
The breach.
A wound in the air—vertical, jagged, leaking light the color of bruised plums. Whispers spilled from it, languages Kael almost knew.
*…month ends…month ends…*
Dorian covered his ears. "Gods."
"This is what the loop feeds," Liora said. "Every reset pours mana here. Someone's collecting."
Kael stepped closer. The whispers sharpened.
*…before the month ends…close or harvest…*
A figure stood on the far rim of the cavern—dean's livery, Serath's face.
"You came," Serath said. "Good. Curiosity is fertilizer."
"Stop speaking in riddles," Kael said.
Serath spread his hands. "The breach is a door. The academy is a key. The month is a trial. Graduate—or become fuel.
