Bloodborn Mate Contract

Chapter 30 · Bones Under Duskridge

We're falling and I can smell dirt that's been dead for a hundred years.

Cain's got my wrist. His claws are out and they're ripping through stone on the way down, trying to slow us. Sparks everywhere. My other hand is still smoking from where his blood hit it and the floor decided to open up like it was waiting.

"Let go," I say, because I heal and he might not if we hit wrong.

"Shut up."

We slam into something. Not ground. Water. Cold and black and it tastes like rust when it gets in my mouth. I kick up and my boots hit stone. Shallow. Maybe three feet. Cain's already standing, already pulling me up by the arm.

"You good?"

I spit out whatever the hell that water is. "Define good."

He's scanning the walls. We're in some kind of tunnel. No, not a tunnel. The stones are too old, too deliberate. The ceiling is maybe seven feet up and there are carvings I can't read. Something moves in the water by my ankle and I step back fast.

"What is this place?" I ask.

Cain doesn't answer right away.
