Chapter 24 · Trial in Chains
"Don't move." The enforcer's rifle muzzle pressed cold against my temple before the smoke cleared.
Kael's hand tightened around mine. "She's unarmed."
"Step back, Thorne." Three more enforcers flooded through the blown doorway, tactical gear gleaming under the emergency lights. "Judge Hale, you're under arrest for identity fraud and judicial corruption."
I tried to pull free from Kael's grip. He didn't let go.
"On what evidence?" My voice came out steadier than I felt.
The lead enforcer smiled. "Speaker Lockwood provided documentation. Birth records. DNA reports. A very thorough file on how a dead girl became a Moonsworn judge."
My stomach dropped. Asher had moved faster than I'd expected.
"Where's the trial?" Kael asked.
"Emergency tribunal. Tonight. Council chamber."
"That's not protocol," I said. "Any judge facing charges gets forty-eight hours to prepare defense."
"Protocol died when you faked your bloodline." The enforcer gestured with his rifle. "Hands behind your back."
Kael stepped between us. "She walks in free or you carry me out first."
The moonbond flared hot in my chest. I felt his pulse through our joined hands, steady and deliberate.
