Chapter 28 · Tomorrow, Borrowed
"Val." Sienna's voice cuts through the nothing. "He's two meters ahead. Don't move."
I can't see her. Can't see anything. The blast took my sight same time it took my hearing last loop, and now I'm standing in a void with nothing but the heat of Sienna's hand still pressed against my shoulder and the cold ceramic tile under my feet.
"I'm not moving," I say, except I can't hear myself say it so I don't know if I'm shouting or whispering.
Sienna's grip tightens. "Marcus is circling. He thinks you're alone."
"How are you talking to me?"
"I'm not." Her hand slides down my arm, finds my wrist, squeezes twice. Then I feel it—something under my skin, humming. The timers. I can still feel the timers.
I reach out blind and the air shifts. There's a shape two meters ahead, exactly where Sienna said. Not a shape I can see. A shape I can *feel*, the same way I used to feel countdowns before I could see them. A knot of time pulling tight.
Marcus.
"He's got the remote," Sienna says into my ear, except she's not speaking. I'm reading her pulse through her palm.
