Chapter 8 · The Partner's Last Cut

"She's alive." I'm holding the photo so tight the edges cut into my palm. "Mia's alive and you knew."

Sienna doesn't answer. She's staring at the street below the warehouse catwalk, breathing hard. Blood's still dripping from her split lip where Marcus hit her twenty minutes ago.

"Sienna."

"Put it away." Her voice is flat. "We don't have time."

"Make time." I step in front of her, blocking her view. "You said Mia paid you six years ago. Paid for what? Where is she?"

Sienna's eyes flick to mine, then past me. "Move."

"No."

"Val—"

The metal under us groans. Not a settling groan. A breaking one.

I look down. The catwalk's bolts are shearing off one by one. Marcus didn't just leave us locked in. He rigged the whole platform.

"Off. Now." Sienna grabs my wrist and pulls.

I yank free. "Tell me where she is first."

"Are you insane?" Sienna's voice cracks. "We have thirty seconds before this whole thing drops."

"Then talk fast."

Another bolt pops. The catwalk tilts five degrees. I catch the rail, and Sienna catches me.

Her hand's on my arm. Her breath's on my face.
