Chapter 24 · Don't Come Get Me

Ryan's vision split into two feeds and neither one made sense. The left eye fed him street grid, the right eye fed him her signal bouncing through three relay towers. His hands were shaking. The current in his left leg had gone numb-hot ten minutes ago.

"Kash, you're smoking." Derek's voice sounded far away.

He wasn't smoking. That was steam coming off his jacket. The moisture in the air around his shoulder was condensing because his skin temp had spiked to a hundred and four. He could feel the charge building in his chest like a second heartbeat. "Shut up. I'm tracking."

"You're gonna fry your own brain before you find her."

Ryan slammed his palm against the wall. The plaster cracked. A thin line of scorch marked where his hand hit. "I said shut up."

Derek stepped back. Smart.

The signal moved fast. Wherever she was, she wasn't walking. The convoy was doing sixty, maybe seventy, cutting through the industrial zone on the south side. He pulled up the traffic cams. Three black vans, no plates, windows tinted dark enough to be illegal. Corporate. Had to be.

His port buzzed. Not the normal buzz.
