Chapter 28 · Untitled Chapter

"Ivy, don't move." Rex's warning came too late.

The wolf's teeth hovered an inch from her throat. His claws dug into the dirt on either side of her head, pinning her to the stone floor. Hot breath struck her neck. One sharp bite would end her.

His eyes were silver. No green. No Cain.

"Cain," Ivy whispered. "I know you're in there."

The beast growled. The vibration rolled through her ribs.

Behind him, Mara lifted her knife. "Ivy, get down."

"I'm already down."

"Then stop talking."

Ivy kept her eyes on the wolf. Her hands shook, but she raised them anyway, palms open. "You stopped before. When I touched you. You remembered me."

His lips peeled farther back. Saliva struck her collarbone.

"You promised to get me across the border," she said. "Thirty days. We're not done."

The pressure at her throat increased. A canine broke the skin. Warm blood slid toward her shoulder.

Then the wolf jerked away as if someone had struck him.

He staggered backward, claws scraping stone, and hit the far wall. His body folded into a crouch. His sides heaved.

Ivy pushed herself upright. Her neck burned.
