Chapter 13 · The First Kade
Mara hit pause before the video could loop again.
Kade didn't move. He stood three feet from the cracked monitor, hands loose at his sides, staring at the frozen frame like it might reach out and drag him back inside.
She wanted to say something. She didn't know what.
The lab footage sat there between them, paused on a younger version of Kade strapped to a surgical table, chest split open, wires threaded through muscle and bone. The timestamp read eleven years ago. The file name read Subject K-01: Veridian Integration Protocol.
K-01.
The first one.
"Kade," she said quietly.
He didn't answer. His jaw worked like he was chewing through words he couldn't spit out.
Mara pulled the drive from the terminal and pocketed it. Her hands were steadier than they should've been. She'd spent the last ten minutes watching her dead mother's face explain, in calm clinical detail, how they'd built a human weapon by locking a military AI core to a living heart. How the subject's memory would fragment under cognitive load.
