Cold Ember: Gene Bound

Chapter 3

Cold Ember: Gene Bound. Blood Pact

"Get the hell away from me!" Cain roared, his voice a distorted glitch of metal and rage. He slammed his fist into the rusted bulkhead, denting the steel like it was wet cardboard.

Lila scrambled back, her boots sliding in a pool of neon-blue synthetic blood. The control tablet in her hand was screaming, the screen flashing a violent, rhythmic crimson. *REMOTE OVERRIDE ACTIVE.*

"I'm trying to help you!" she yelled, dodging a piece of debris he'd just kicked across the corridor. "If I don't lock this signal, they're going to fry your brain or blow this whole sector to dust!"

Cain lunged. In a blur of gene-modded speed, he had her pinned against the cold damp wall. His forearm was pressed against her throat—not crushing, but enough to let her know he could. His eyes weren't human anymore; they were glowing slits of amber light, flickering with every surge of the external signal.

"You don't help," he hissed, his breath hot against her cheek, smelling of ozone and old copper. "You tether. You're just another leash, little scavenger."

Lila didn't flinch. She couldn't afford to. She reached up, her fingers trembling as she pressed the tablet's interface directly against the port at the base of his neck. "Then let me be your leash for five minutes so we don't both end up as charcoal!"

He stiffened. A jagged scream ripped from his throat as the tablet pulsed. The override signal fought back, sending a shockwave through his nervous system that made the floor vibrate. Cain's grip tightened on her shoulder, his fingers digging through her leather jacket, bruising the skin.

"Do it!" he gasped, his forehead dropping to rest against hers. "Lock it... now!"

Lila smashed the 'Bind' icon.

A searing white light flared between them. For a second, Lila felt something slide into her mind—not words, but images. A sterile white room. The smell of antiseptic. A voice calling him *Unit 7*. Then, a crushing wave of loneliness so heavy it nearly knocked the wind out of her.

Cain shuddered and went limp, his weight nearly flattening her. The amber glow in his eyes faded back to a stormy, haunted grey. He slid down the wall, landing hard on his haunches, breathing in ragged, wet bursts.

Lila slumped beside him, her chest heaving. She looked at her tablet. The red warning was gone, replaced by a steady, pulsing gold link.

"What did you do?" Cain asked. His voice was back to normal, but it sounded exhausted, stripped raw.

"I bound the key to my biometric signature," Lila panted, wiping a smudge of grease from her forehead. "The override can't reach you if I'm the only one who can authorize the signal. But it means..."

"It means I can't run away from you," he finished. He looked down at his hands. They were drenched in the blue blood of the hunters he'd slaughtered. He didn't look proud. He looked disgusted.

He held his hands out toward her, the gore dripping onto the floor. "Does it make you sick? Looking at this?"

Lila looked at the blood, then up at his face. He was terrifyingly beautiful in a way that felt like a warning. "I live in a dump, Cain. I've seen worse things coming out of a clogged drain. Just... don't get it on my boots."

A ghost of a smirk touched his lips, gone before it could truly form. "You're a strange little thing."

"And you're a walking weapon of mass destruction with a temper. We're a match made in hell," she snapped, though she didn't pull away when his arm brushed hers.

Suddenly, a high-pitched chime echoed through the corridor. Not from her tablet, but from the city's public broadcast system. A holographic screen flickered to life in the air above them, casting a harsh blue light over the rust.

It was a bounty notice.

Lila's heart dropped. The image wasn't of a nameless soldier. It was a high-res capture of Cain from ten minutes ago, mid-kill, his face twisted in a predatory snarl.

*TARGET: GENE-MOD UNIT 7. STATUS: ROGUE. REWARD: 500,000 CREDITS DEAD OR ALIVE.*

Below the image, a secondary notice scrolled in bright yellow: *COMPLICITY WARNING. ANY CIVILIAN ASSISTING THE TARGET WILL BE EXECUTED ON SIGHT.*

"Five hundred thousand," Lila whispered. That was enough to buy her brother the best med-pod in the Hive. Enough to buy a whole new life.

Cain didn't look at the screen. He was watching her. He saw the way her eyes lingered on the number. He stood up slowly, looming over her, the power imbalance shifting back in an instant.

"Go ahead," he said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low vibration. "Call it in. Get your credits. I'm sure they'll let you keep a few before they scrub your brain for knowing too much."

Lila stood up, her jaw set. "I'm not selling you. Not yet."

"Not yet," he repeated, a dark laugh vibrating in his chest. "Smart girl. But you realize we're officially the most wanted pair in the sector now? There's no going back to your little scrap-heap."

"I never wanted to go back," she lied.

They started moving, keeping to the shadows of the ventilation shafts. Every few minutes, the distant wail of Enforcer sirens echoed through the pipes. The city was waking up, and it was hunting.

"Where are we going?" Cain asked. He was walking half a step behind her, his presence like a physical weight, a storm waiting to break.

"The Hive," she said. "There's a black-market port near the lower gates. If I can get a signal booster, I can mask your signature. We can disappear."

"Disappear where?"

"Somewhere they can't find us. Somewhere you can figure out who the hell you are without killing everything in a ten-foot radius."

Cain stopped. He reached out, his large hand closing around her upper arm. He didn't squeeze, but the heat of his skin seeped through her clothes, sending a jolt of electricity up her spine. He pulled her closer, his face inches from hers.

"I know exactly who I am, Lila," he whispered. "I'm the thing they built to make sure people like you stay afraid. Don't forget that when you're pretending we're friends."

Lila stared back, refusing to blink. "I don't pretend. I'm terrified of you. But I'm more terrified of being alone in this shithole. So shut up and keep walking."

He let her go, but the tension remained, a taut wire stretched between them.

As they approached the massive, rusted bulkheads of the Hive's main gate, the atmosphere changed. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone and desperation. Scavengers and low-lifes huddled in the dim light, their eyes scanning the newcomers with predatory hunger.

Lila led him toward the security checkpoint, her heart hammering against her ribs. The gate was a monolithic slab of iron, guarded by two armored drones and a man who looked like he'd been carved out of granite.

"ID check," the guard barked, not even looking up from his console.

Lila stepped forward, sliding her chip across the reader. "Lila Vance. Returning from the wastes with... salvage."

She gestured vaguely to Cain, who had pulled a tattered cloak over his shoulders to hide the combat plating.

The guard finally looked up. He didn't look at the chip. He looked straight at Lila. His eyes widened, a flicker of genuine shock crossing his face.

"Vance?" the guard asked, his voice suddenly losing its edge.

Lila froze. "Do I know you?"

"You don't remember me?" The guard stepped away from the console, his hand hovering near his holster, but not drawing. He looked past her, staring at the heavy iron doors of the Hive as they began to grind open with a scream of protesting metal.

"Your father told us you'd be dead by now," the guard said.

Lila's breath hitched. "What? My father's been gone for ten years."

"Is that what they told you?"

As the massive gates swung wide, a figure stepped out of the smog. He was lean, dressed in the high-collared black gear of the Hive's inner circle, his face scarred but unmistakable.

Lila stopped breathing. The world seemed to tilt.

"Hello, Lila," the man said, his voice a cold rasp that echoed through the plaza. "I see you've brought me a very interesting toy."

Don't stop now. The next chapter is waiting.
