Chapter 30 · He slammed both hands against the sides of
He slammed both hands against the sides of his head. “No. No, that isn’t mine.”
“What isn’t yours?”
“The memory.”
“Tell me.”
“Get away.”
“Tell me!”
A pulse of red light burst under his skin. The comm unit screamed with static, then a different voice cut through it.
“Cain, report.”
He went still.
Lila grabbed the comm from her belt and crushed it under her boot.
The voice died.
Cain looked up at her, breathing hard.
“You broke the channel,” he said.
“Was I supposed to leave it open?”
“You just cut off their signal.”
“Congratulations. You’re welcome.”
“They’ll triangulate us.”
“Then we move.”
He tried to stand.
His knees buckled.
Lila caught him under the arm. His weight dragged her against his side. Heat rolled through his jacket, and his breath brushed her hair.
“Don’t touch me,” he muttered.
“You’re welcome to stand without falling.”
“I can stand.”
“Sure. You look great.”
He shoved himself upright and nearly collapsed again.
Lila tightened her grip. “Stop fighting me.”
“You’re enjoying this.”
“Watching you lose a fight with your own brain? A little.”
His mouth twitched, but the expression vanished fast.
“What did you hear?” she asked.
“Nothing.”
“Cain.”
“Drop it.”
