Chapter 57 · Shoot him!

He rose with a sound that made the nearest guard step back.

"Shoot him!" Silas yelled.

The guard pulled the trigger.

Cain caught the rifle barrel and drove it upward. The shot tore through the ceiling. He slammed his forehead into the guard's visor, ripped the weapon free, and swept the man's legs out from under him.

The second guard charged.

Lila came from the side and drove a metal rod into his knee.

"Down!" she yelled.

Cain grabbed the guard's vest and threw him into the weapons rack.

The rack collapsed with a thunderous crash.

The maintenance hatch disappeared beneath steel crates.

Lila stared at the wreckage.

"That wasn't part of my plan."

"You said you always have one."

"I said I always have one. I didn't say it was good."

The third guard swung his rifle toward her.

Cain moved first.

He crossed the space between them and struck the weapon aside. The guard's fist clipped Cain's mouth. Cain barely felt it. He caught the man's coat, drove him into the glass, and held him there.

"Open the door," Cain said.

The guard's eyes flicked toward Silas.

"He'll kill me."

"I will if you don't."

"Cain," Lila warned.
