Silas paused.

Lila smiled through the pain. "That's right. Check the feed."

The boot lifted for half a second.

Lila hooked her fingers around the emergency lever and pulled.

The lights died.

The lab dropped into red emergency glow.

Somewhere behind her, metal tore.

Silas swore.

Cain hit the floor hard, rolled, and came up with a length of broken restraint in his hand. Tomas roared and charged through the red haze.

"Cain, left!" Lila shouted.

Cain turned just in time. Tomas's fist passed his cheek. Cain caught the arm and twisted, using Tomas's momentum to send him into the wall.

The entire room shook.

"The door!" Lila yelled. "Can you open it?"

"Not from here."

"You said you could break anything."

"I said I could break people."

"Great. Very useful."

Cain shoved Tomas back as the larger man tried to rise. "The control unit. Give it to me."

Lila's fingers closed around it.

"No."

Cain stared at her. "You need to trust me."

"That's rich, coming from the guy who hid the fact that he was made in a lab."
