Chapter 30 · Don't Let Her Wake Up

The pod hit atmosphere and I slammed into the harness hard enough to taste blood.

Senna was still holding the gun. Not at me. Just holding it, barrel down, her knuckles white around the grip like she'd forgotten how to let go. Her face was locked in that same blank stare she'd been wearing since the recording cut out. Her dad's voice still rattling around in both our heads.

Don't let Kira wake up.

I spat into the corner and wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. "You planning to shoot me or just keep looking at me like that?"

She didn't answer. The pod shuddered. The viewscreen showed nothing but gray rock and dust plumes. Dead moon. No atmo to speak of. If we cracked the hull on landing we'd have about thirty seconds before our lungs turned inside out.

"Senna."

Nothing.

I reached over and grabbed her wrist. She flinched but didn't pull away. Her skin was ice cold.

"Look at me."

She did. Her eyes were red-rimmed and wet but she wasn't crying.
