Core Bound: Forbidden Echoes

Chapter 1

Core Bound: Forbidden Echoes. No Way Out

"Don't even think about running, little bird. I can smell the core from here."

Lyra slammed her back against the rusted metal of the alley wall. Cold. Wet. Dead end. The Enforcer’s voice wasn't a shout—it was a low, predatory hum that made the humid air vibrate.

Click. Click. Click.

His boots hit the pavement slow. Deliberate. He knew she had nowhere to go.

"Get away from me!" Lyra snapped. Her voice shook, but she spat the words like venom. She gripped a jagged piece of scrap metal, knuckles white, chest heaving.

"Or what?"

The man stepped into the flickering neon light. Tall. Wrapped in a charcoal tactical coat that swallowed the shadows. His eyes weren't human—piercing, metallic silver that sliced right through her.

"You gonna poke me with a piece of trash?" He smirked. "Cute."

Lyra couldn't answer. The forbidden star-core embedded in her chest began to thrum. A frantic, golden heartbeat pulsing against her ribs. It was too loud. A beacon. And he was the moth.

"Give it up, Lyra," he said, his voice dropping an octave. "The Council wants the core. I just want the bounty. We both win if you stop pretending you're not terrified."

"I'm not giving you a damn thing!"

She lunged. Desperate. Clumsy. She swung the scrap metal straight for his throat.

He didn't even flinch.

One fluid motion. His hand shot out, gripping her wrist with a strength that made her bones groan. He twisted, pinning her against the corrugated wall with a violent *thud*.

Air left her lungs in a sharp gasp.

"Too slow," he whispered.

He was too close. She could smell ozone and expensive tobacco. His chest pressed against hers—an oppressive, hard weight that left her breathless. "You've got a lot of fight for someone whose heart is trying to jump out of their chest."

Lyra glared up at him. "Go to hell."

"Been there. It's boring." His silver eyes drifted down to her chest, where golden light leaked through the fabric of her worn shirt. "That core... it's not just forbidden. It's unstable. You're a walking bomb, and you don't even have the manual."

He tightened his grip, pulling her closer until their noses almost touched. He held her life in the palm of his hand, and he loved every second of it.

"Let me go, or I'll blow us both to the stars!"

"Do it then." He leaned in, a ghost of a smirk on his lips. "Show me how much of a monster you really are. Or maybe you're just a scared little girl playing with fire."

Fury flared in her gut. Hotter than the core.

Lyra stopped fighting the energy. She invited it.

*Boom.*

A shockwave of pure, golden kinetic energy erupted from her chest. A scream of power. It ripped through the alley, shattering windows and throwing the Enforcer backward. He hit a stack of crates with a crash that echoed through the sector, splintering wood everywhere.

Lyra collapsed. Her vision blurred. A sharp spike of pain shot through her sternum—the core was eating her alive to fuel the blast. She coughed, a thin trail of blood leaking from her lip.

"Damn," a voice groaned.

Cain stood up, brushing dust off his shoulder. Not unconscious. Not even bleeding. He looked... impressed.

He stepped toward her, boots crunching on broken glass. "Nice trick. Most people just scream and faint."

He stopped a few feet away, posture relaxed, eyes lethal. "But look at you. Shaking. You can't even stand, and you're already out of juice."

"I... I can do it again," she lied. She tried to push up, but her arms gave out. She slumped back onto the wet concrete.

"Sure you can. Maybe in three days after a nap." Cain reached into his coat and flicked on a holographic device. A red target pulsed on the screen. "The Council's cleanup crew is three blocks away. They don't want to capture you, Lyra. They want to harvest the core."

Lyra froze. "What?"

"You really don't know, do you?" Cain loomed over her, his shadow swallowing her whole. "You're not a person to them. You're a battery. A very rare, very illegal battery."

He knelt beside her. He didn't touch her, but the proximity was suffocating. His voice was a low, dangerous murmur. "I can stop them. I can get you out of this sector. I can even help you find that brother of yours."

Lyra's head snapped up. "How do you know about him?"

Cain didn't answer. He just watched her, reading every flicker of fear on her face. "I know you've been running for six months. I know you've slept in three different sewers. And I know that if you stay here, you're dead by midnight."

"Why do you care?" she spat. "You're an Enforcer. Your job is to hand me over."

"My job is to get paid," he replied. "And right now, you're worth more to me alive and under my thumb than dead in a lab. Plus, I like a challenge."

He stood and offered a hand. Not a kindness. A demand.

"I don't trust you," she whispered.

"Good. Trust is for people who aren't being hunted by the government." He stepped closer. "But you're out of options. No friends, no money, and a heart that's about to explode. I'm the only exit you've got."

In the distance, the shrill wail of Council sirens pierced the air. Red and blue lights began to paint the alley walls.

They were here.

Lyra reached out. Her trembling hand disappeared into his large, calloused grip. The moment their skin touched, a spark of static snapped between them. Not the core. Something visceral.

Cain yanked her up with sudden force, pulling her flush against his chest. Lyra gasped, her breath hitching against the hard line of his muscles. He didn't let go. He leaned down, lips brushing the shell of her ear.

"One condition," he whispered, sending a jolt of heat through her. "Once we sign this, you belong to me. Every move you make, every breath you take, is by my leave. I don't just protect you—I own the contract."

He pulled back, eyes cold and commanding. He produced a shimmering black shard—a soul-bind contract.

"Want to live?" he asked, the shard glowing with a predatory light. "Sign this."

Don't stop now. The next chapter is waiting.
