Chapter 24 · Forbidden Rescue

"Don't you dare die on me, you arrogant bastard!"

Lyra screamed the words, her voice cracking as she lunged.

Cain didn't even have time to grunt. The sniper round had punched straight through his tactical vest, slamming him back against the cold docking bay plating. Blood—dark, hot, and violent—sprayed across the gray metal in a jagged streak.

Lyra slid on her knees, fabric screeching against steel. She grabbed his collar, shaking him hard. "Cain! Look at me! Open your eyes!"

He gasped. A wet, rattling sound that made her stomach flip. His pupils were blown wide, struggling to lock onto her. He tried to speak, but a bubble of blood popped on his lips.

"Shut up. Don't talk," she snapped. Her hands trembled as she ripped open his vest. "I'm getting you out. I don't care if I have to drag your heavy ass across the entire sector."

"Go..." he wheezed. His hand twitched toward her wrist. He didn't have the strength to grip; his fingers just brushed her skin, leaving a smear of crimson. "The squad... they're coming. Get out."

"Screw that!" Lyra yelled. She slammed her palms against the wound.
