Chapter 27 · Tamer of the Ash Wilds - Chapter 27: Don't Hand Him Over

Lin cleared the hatch and Vira's crossbow was already up.

Not pointed at him. Past him. Down into the shaft he'd just climbed out of. Three handlers in Ember Gate grey stood behind her, two with shock-sticks, one with a rifle slung low. The one with the rifle had his hand on the strap. Not holding it yet. But close.

Vira didn't look at Lin. Her jaw was set, eyes locked on the dark below.

"He's sedated," she said. Flat. Too flat. "He won't feel it."

Lin's stomach dropped. "Feel what."

"The retrieval." The lead handler stepped forward, older guy, scar down his temple. "We're taking the specimen back to the hatchery for evaluation. Contract terms. You signed when you entered Zone Eight."

"I didn't sign anything."

"Your sponsor did." The man's eyes flicked to Vira. She still hadn't moved. The crossbow bolt caught the dim overhead light, sharp and clean. "Miss Vira's been cooperative. We appreciate that. Makes this easier for everyone."

Lin looked at her. Really looked. The line of her shoulders was too tight. Her trigger hand wasn't shaking but her knuckles were bone-white against the stock.

"Vira."

She swallowed. Still didn't turn.
