Die Again, Eat Stronger

Chapter 35 · After the Reset

"Move, Jessa!" Kane slammed his shoulder into me just as the ceiling came down.

Stone hit his back. He grunted, dropped to one knee, and shoved me through the gap before another slab crashed behind us.

I landed hard on my hands. My claws scraped over black rock. Behind me, Kane disappeared under dust and broken stone.

"Kane!"

"Don't stop!"

His voice came from the rubble. Too close. Too rough.

I spun around and grabbed the nearest chunk of debris. It was bigger than my whole body in this form, but my claws dug into it anyway.

"Get out of there!"

"That's what I'm trying to do. Unless you plan to stare at me until the dungeon eats us?"

"You were under a ceiling!"

"And now I'm under a pile of rocks. Very different problem. Pull."

I wedged my claws beneath the slab and pushed. My arms shook. The black, rat-like body the dungeon had forced on me was small, ugly, and built for crawling through cracks. It was not built for lifting a hunter twice my size.

So I bit the stone.

The taste hit my tongue like burnt metal.
