Chapter 22 · Frequency Trap
"Step away from the curtain, Kael. Now."
Augustus didn't shout. He didn't have to. The order hit my skull like a slap and tried to fold my knees for me.
Kael didn't move. His arm locked around my waist, his chest hard against my back. Hot. Solid. Not letting go.
"She's in shock, My Lord," Kael said. His voice was low and edged. "Your arrival—"
"Don't lie to me." Augustus clicked forward on the marble. One step. Two. "I can smell the ozone. I can feel it. There's a third frequency in this room. Who's behind the veil?"
My heart slammed against Kael's ribs so hard I was sure Augustus could hear it.
If he pulled that curtain, we were dead. Not just dead. Harvested. The Stranger — my backup container — was right there. One tug and it's over for both of us.
I had to break his focus. Now.
I pressed my cheek to Kael's shoulder and made my voice shake. Loud enough for Augustus to hear every word.
"You're shaking, Kael," I whispered against his ear. My breath hit his skin. "Is the great High Guard actually scared of him?"
Kael went rigid.
