Chapter 8 · I'm not a trial subject
"I'm not a trial subject."
His silence answered that one.
I stepped closer. "What did you do to me?"
"I didn't do anything."
"You know what Blackwater is. You knew the timer meant a recall. You knew where the dry tank was. Stop acting like you walked into this with me."
His jaw flexed.
"I walked into it because you were going to die alone in a hospital bed."
"I woke up in a hospital bed with somebody else's name."
"Because your name is dangerous."
"My name is mine."
"Not after Blackwater."
The tunnel groaned above us.
Dust slipped from the ceiling.
Ethan looked past me. "We have maybe thirty seconds before she gets through."
"Then show me the files."
"You don't know what you're asking for."
"I know I need proof. I know Vault's intranet says I quit three years ago. I know Mira Soh is sitting in my office with my face, my company, and my entire life. I know my mother left a voice memo at the lab, and I know somebody erased most of it."
His eyes hardened at my mother's name.
"Your mother knew."
"Knew what?"
"Enough to be afraid."
"Of me?"
He looked away.
