Chapter 18 · My Name's On That List
"Drop the gun, Sila." Joren's rifle pressed against the back of her skull. "Or I start with the prisoner."
Sila kept her pistol trained on the tunnel door. Kael stood three feet in front of her, one hand clamped over the hole in his side, blood running between his fingers and dripping onto the concrete.
Joren had been part of her crew for eight months.
He knew exactly how close he needed to stand to make killing her look easy.
"You sold us out," Sila said.
"I sold him out." Joren nodded at Kael. "You came free with the deal."
Kael gave a rough laugh. "That’s almost sweet. He only wanted one of us dead."
"Shut up," Joren snapped.
"You’re bleeding through your jacket," Sila said without looking at Kael. "Can you still move?"
"Can you still shoot?"
"Don’t answer a question with a question."
"Then yes. Badly."
Joren shifted the rifle. The muzzle dug harder into Sila’s head.
"Hands away from your weapon," he ordered. "Slow."
Sila’s fingers tightened around the pistol grip. The tunnel behind Joren was dark, but she could hear boots scraping over the broken stairs. More soldiers were coming. Capital armor. Heavy steps. Too many.
