Chapter 15 · Dancing with Shadows

"You’re shaking," Sera whispered, her voice cutting through the orchestral swell of the ballroom.

She didn't just say it. She tightened her grip on Nora’s waist, pulling her flush against her chest to keep her steady. Nora felt the heat of Sera’s palm through the thin silk of her gold gown, a stark contrast to the ice currently flooding her veins.

"I'm fine," Nora lied, her voice sounding thin even to her own ears.

She wasn't fine. Beneath the glittering fabric, the shadows were clawing. Not the controlled, obedient whispers she used to keep Solis in awe, but something feral. They were leaking, bleeding out from her pores like black ink in clear water, swirling around her ankles in a way that would be obvious to anyone looking down.

"You're a liar," Sera murmured, stepping closer, her breath ghosting over Nora’s ear. "And you're slipping. I can feel the cold coming off you in waves. What's happening, Nora? Is the mask finally cracking?"

Nora stiffened, her fingers digging into Sera’s shoulder. "Shut up and dance. We have an audience."

"Oh, I'm dancing," Sera said, a dangerous edge to her tone.
