Chapter 29 · Foghorn

"Get dressed. Now." Callum's hand closed around my wrist before I'd even opened my eyes all the way, and he was already hauling me off the bed, off him, off whatever we'd been an hour ago.

The foghorn went off again, three short blasts, close enough to rattle the window glass in his harbor office. That horn didn't belong to a fishing boat. That was a cargo horn. That was the kind of horn that meant somebody important just docked.

"Who's coming." Not a question. My voice still had sleep in it and the mark on my collarbone was still warm from his mouth, and I hated how much that mattered to me right now.

"Voss." He said it like a curse. "Desmond Voss. Larkin's father."

I was already reaching for my shirt. "The bride you didn't marry."

"The bride I rejected you to almost marry," he said, and even now, twenty-nine chapters into whatever this was, the correction landed like a slap. "He's got the harbor board with him. And a lawyer."

"Why do I care about a lawyer."

"Because the lawyer's carrying a folder with your name on it.
