He Met His Daughter

Chapter 20 · Cold Sandwich

"You've been staring at that sandwich for forty minutes, Counselor."

Cade's voice came low across the conference table, not even looking up from his folder. I looked down. Turkey on rye, untouched, the cheese gone waxy under the fluorescent lights. Six hours in this room and I hadn't eaten a bite.

"I'm not hungry," I said. "I'm busy losing my kid to your lawyer's PowerPoint."

His lawyer, Delaney, didn't even flinch. She just slid another page across the table like she was dealing cards. "Primary physical custody to Mr. Vane, alternating weekends to Ms. Cole. Given her firm's travel schedule, we think it's in Maya's best interest."

"Her best interest." I laughed, and it came out uglier than I meant it to. "You mean his best interest. You've had me flying to London twice this year for the exact same firm he sits on the board of."

"That's not relevant," Delaney said.

"It's extremely relevant." I pointed at Cade. "He knows my schedule because he made half of it."

Cade finally looked up. Grey eyes, flat, unreadable, the same eyes Maya has when she's trying not to cry in front of people. "I didn't make your schedule, Avery.
