Cade Vane didn't wait for me to open the door all the way. He put his boot in the gap and a folder against my chest before I'd even said his name.

"Sign it," he said. "Tonight."

I shoved the folder back at him hard enough that the corner caught my knuckle. "Get your boot out of my door."

"Sign it, and I will."

He smelled like cold air and whatever he'd been drinking at whatever meeting he'd stormed out of to get here. Up close his jaw had that tight, held-together look he only gets when he's about to lose something and hasn't decided yet how loud he's going to be about it.

"What is it." I didn't touch the folder this time. I kept my arms crossed so he could see I wasn't going to.

"Registration form. St. Aldric's. Kindergarten interview's at nine tomorrow."

"I know when Maya's interview is. I filled out the application. Me. Alone. Five months ago."

"They called me today." His voice went flat in a way that scared me more than yelling would have. "Asked why the father's line was blank. Asked if there was a father.
