Chapter 26 · Rain Card
Ethan's hand caught the door before I could shut it, and the folder in his fist was already soaked through, the corner bleeding blue ink onto his knuckles.
"You don't get to slam this on me, Sloane." His voice cracked on my name like it still owed him something. "Not after what you did."
"What I did." I didn't move off the threshold. Rain came in sideways behind him, hitting the tile, and I could smell the whiskey under his skin from three feet back. "You rejected me on a dock in front of forty people. What exactly did I do to you?"
He threw the folder. It hit my chest and dropped, papers fanning across my boots, half of them already curling wet.
"Read it."
I didn't look down. I kept my eyes on him because that's the rule I learned working night shift on men twice his size — you never look away first, not from someone shaking like that.
"I'm not signing anything you shove at me in a hallway."
"It's not a signature." His jaw worked.
