Chapter 29 · Last Hunter

The door didn't open. It came off the hinge.

"Sloane." Ethan's voice cracked on my name, and he stumbled into the clinic like something had been chewing on him. Blood down one side of his jaw. His shirt torn at the collar, the fabric flapping loose over a bite that hadn't closed yet.

Cassian was on his feet before I even registered the sound, my gauze roll still half-wrapped around his forearm, blood from his own cut smearing across my fingers where I'd been holding him still two seconds ago.

"Get out," Cassian said. Flat. No heat in it, which was worse than heat.

Ethan didn't get out. He grabbed the exam table for balance and looked straight at me like Cassian wasn't even in the room. "They took the last one. Hunter. Alive. He's in the truck outside and he's saying your name, Sloane, he's saying he was paid to—"

"Paid to what." My voice came out steadier than I felt.

"To make sure you didn't leave the port alive.
